Ruffle Scarves
Dora Broughton again this year will be selling her knitted ruffle scarves at coffee hour on Sunday March 30th.  The cost is $20 each with the proceeds going towards the narthex renovation.


AIDS Ministry
There will be a Service of Prayer and Meditation for People Concerned with HIV/AIDS this Sunday March 30th at 7:00 pm in the chapel, followed by refreshments and fellowship.  All are welcome.


Terrific Tuesdays
All are welcome to come and share a meal and good conversation in the parish hall from 5-7 every Tuesday until the end of May. Volunteers for April and May are needed to supply a light meal for about 12 people on Tuesdays.  A sign up sheet is on the bulletin board in the hallway. Thank you to Marietta for last week's soup and to Devon for volunteering for March 18.


Easter flowers
Please help the Altar Guild to decorate the church for Easter and to remember loved ones. Please include a note with the names of the persons being remembered. You can make out your cheque to St John's Altar Guild. It can be given to Melodie Conlon or Vicki Milnes or left in the Altar Guild slot in the office.

Mini-retreat on Trinity, Saturday March 29, 2014, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the chapel
Has there ever been a time when you experienced God in human expression, as Christ? Was there a connection with the Spirit of God? A mini-retreat to attempt to explore Trinity, to be offered by spiritual director Carol Edgar, will include singing and readings, breathing exercises and meditation followed by individual reflection, gentle exercises and optional sharing. Come and explore how Trinity might be experienced!

Half-Time Journey From Success To Significance
Are you in “Half-Time” of your life and beginning to explore what God has in store for you in your second half?   If so then this upcoming St. Alban’s Half Time Small Group is for you! We will meet for 10 weeks at St. Alban’s church on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm commencing on Wednesday at April 2nd. Paschal Meal - Mark your calendar!
The Paschal meal will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 6:00 pm.  It will be followed by Maundy Thursday  Liturgy in the church at 7:30 pm. In order to put on this event, we need many, many volunteers. There are sign-up sheets in the hall. The tickets for the lamb dinner are $15, with children under 12 $5. Tickets will go on sale in April.


Lenten Series - Seeking Right Relationships
A partnership initiative of Glebe-St. James and Southminster United Churches

Monday March 31st, 7:00 p.m., Dr. Cindy Blackstock, Human Rights for Children and Families; Executive Director, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, Director of FNCARES, associate professor at the Faculty of Extension, U. of Alberta. A member of the Gitxsan Nation, Cindy has worked in the field of child and family services for over 20 years. She has authored over 50 publications on the causes of disadvantage for Aboriginal children and families; on the need for equitable and culturally based interventions; on reconciliation; and on First Nations research ethics and ontology.

Monday, April 7th, 7:00 p.m,  Gabrielle Fayant - Idle-No-More: The Past-The Present-The Future.  Gabrielle Fayant, Vice-President of the Odawa Native Friendship Centre, will speak about  the Idle No More Movement. Gabrielle has worked for a variety of National Aboriginal Organizations. She also has experience on a number of local, regional and national advisory committees and councilssuch as the Canadian Commission of UNESCO’s Youth Advisory Group.

St Alban's Student Leadership Intern Program
St Alban's will be awarding Internships in its Student Leadership Program for the academic year 2014-2015 to students wanting to engage in the development of their faith and leadership skills and to obtain valuable hands-on experience in a variety of placement opportunities with St Alban's Church and its community partners. Successful applicants will commit themselves to the following components of the program:

  1. Biweekly (6 per term) faith formation meetings led by Rev. Mark Whitall and others of St Alban's Church
  2. Monthly Leadership Development Sessions led by a variety of expert facilitators and covering topics such as Leadership Styles, Communications, Conflict Resolution, Spirituality and Social Justice.
  3. Community Placement of approx. 2 hours per week.  Community placement options include:
    • Within the St Alban's community: leadership of St. Al's@uOttawa club, Youth Ministry, Chaplaincy Work, Children's Ministry, Event Planning, Social Media and Communications.
    • Placements with one of our partner organizations (for example, Centre 454) serving those who are homeless or in need in our neighbourhood.

Interns are expected to worship regularly at St Alban's Church and to be a visible part of the parish community and campus ministry.  The total time commitment is expected to average 3-4 hours per week during the academic term.  Applications received by April 11th 2014 will be given priority.  Interns will receive an honorarium of $500 per semester ($1,000 total) for their acceptance into and successful participation in this program. Update on the Entrance and Narthex Renovation Proposal

Thanks to all those who have made written or verbal comments on the entrance and narthex renovation proposal. Overall, there is considerable excitement about what these changes could do to our accessibility and visibility on Elgin Street. If you have not yet had a chance to examine the photos and drawings of this proposal, please do visit St John’s web site ( or stop by the wall near the side entrance of the nave.

As announced earlier, there will a Special Vestry Meeting to seek formal approval for the renovations. The timing, however, has been changed to allow for a fuller information and consultation process. On Sunday May 4, there will be meeting after the 10:15 service at which a detailed costing and financing plan will be presented. No decision will be made at that time, but it will be a chance for you to see and comment on the financial implications of the renovations.

There are a number of grant opportunities that are currently being explored, and St John’s also has funds in the Diocese’s Consolidated Trust Fund that can be accessed. However, the largest portion of the money would come from a loan from the Diocese, which St John’s would have to repay. Before asking for approval for such a loan, we would like to have a better understanding of what kind of financial support we can expect from parishioners.  To achieve this, we will be launching an online and paper survey on May 4, in which each of you will have the opportunity to indicate the level of financial commitment you would be in a position to make. The survey will be anonymous, and will run for two weeks.  If, as we hope, the survey’s results show that the parish has the financial capacity to carry this project, a decision-making Special Vestry will be held on May 25.
