Ongoing Opportunities for Developing
a Contemplative Practice

All great religious traditions agree that contemplative practice is essential for spiritual growth. Just as athletes build strength and endurance through physical exercise, spiritual seekers develop a connection with God and loving kindness for others through prayer and meditation. We offer three types of meditation practice at St John's. Please read the descriptions that follow and choose the one that seems the best fit for you:

Christian Meditation

Monday evenings 7:30 – 8:30
Classroom #2

Listen to a short talk (on CD) by John Main, followed immediately by 25 minutes of silent meditation, and ending with a short time of discussion. There is no need to register; Just show up. All are welcome.

Centering Prayer

Tuesday evenings 7:30 – 9:00
Classroom #2

Begin with a period of silent meditation, followed by a video presentation by Thomas Keating, and ending with a short time of discussion. There is no need to register; Just show up. All are welcome.

Spiritual conversations

Led by the rector Dana Fisher. These are Scripture based conversations that will help and encourage participants to reflect on and speak to what they hear the scripture say to them.

Lenten Studies



Portrait of a Radical
Wednesdays 6:00pm -7:30pm
February 24th to March 10 2010

A Three Session (in Lent) Series based on the video Portrait of A Radical: The Jesus Movement. Featuring three provocative theologians (Huston Smith, Richard Rohr' and Allen Dwight Callahan), explore the truly radical, dynamic, and passionate message of Jesus. With question for sharing and a suggested action for participants, eg. Creating a desert experience, or praying for someone else, or volunteering in a service organisation in your community etc etc.

Lenten Reflection
Worship: Wednesday mornings during lent
February 24-March 31, From 10 to 10:30)

When the Jews asked Jesus for a sign, he said, ``I will give you only the sign of Jonah'. After three days in the belly of the earth, Jesus rose with news of God's prodigal grace. We will explore the meaning of ``The Sign of Jonah`` as we follow Jonah on his Journey...and Jesus on his way to the cross.

A Quiet Time

Invitation
What do you know is true? How do you decide? What do you do with it? A quiet time to explore truth-telling, to be offered by Carol Edgar in the Chapel on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., will include a candle to centre us, a question to start us off, singing and readings, breathing exercises and a guided imagery meditation followed by individual reflection, gentle exercises and optional sharing to bring us back together, and a litany and blessing to send us on our way. Come and explore the telling of truth!
