Wednesday, 8 June 2011Thanks to so many of you who participated in our parish conversations. They will contribute to further discussion and consideration as we go forward together. However, we are aware that some of you are not able to attend after-church events on Sunday. We’re pleased therefore to offer a third opportunity for a conversation: Wednesday, June 8 at 7 pm. If you are interested in attending please let the office know by phoning 613-232-4500 or emailing office@stjohnsotawa.ca. Please leave your phone number so we can confirm details closer to the date.
SAINTS and SINGERS
11 and 12 June 2011June 11 and 12, 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of Gordon Johnston’s musical leadership at St. John’s. It is time to celebrate with him!! Please join the choir, orchestra and bells at a gala dinner and “entertainment” evening on Saturday, June 11th here at the church. This will be followed on Sunday, June 12th by our 10:15 church service and a concert at 2:00 pm with the present choir and alumni, orchestra and bells. Please contact Bea Robertson at choirreunion@stjohnsottawa.ca for registration form and information.
There are a limited number of seats available for the dinner so “first come, first served”!! The cost for Saturday’s dinner with wine and entertainment and Sunday’s concert - as well as an original “Saints and Singers” burgundy polo shirt is $50 per person. Please let us know if you know of any former choir members who have not been contacted so we can include them in this celebration.
Reserved Parking at St Johns
As a downtown church, parking is always at a premium at St Johns. On Somerset West, a spot is reserved for the rector 24 hours; and, the space beside the dumpsters, is legally required to be kept vacant at all times as a fire exit for the safety of tenants and users of the basement.
In front of the Parish Hall on Elgin Street, two of the parking spots are reserved for the Community Shop volunteers from Monday to Saturday; the third spot is available for other parishioners on church business.
Respect for our reserved parking signs is an offering of love for our congregation, and a chance to bring joy to the lives of our dedicated volunteers.
If you have any questions, feedback or concerns about parking, please direct them to Ani at office@stjohnsottawa.ca. Regular volunteers may be reimbursed for their parking expense by submitting your receipt and a completed cheque request form to Ani's mailbox in the office.
Art Credo 2011
Another successful exhibition has come and gone. Thanks go to all those who helped to bring the show to fruition including: Martha Nixon who managed a good portion of the logistics; the "hangers" led by Alex Bissett; Mary Ann and Ross Varley for the excellent refreshments at vernissage; Saskia Meuffels for assisting with the arrangements of art works; Peggy Campbell for doing the online promotion notices and each of the numerous sitters who kept the doors open for two weeks! There are others who helped in less obvious ways with a variety of valuable contributions and we thank them also. We thank all the artists for offering their work for display, including ten new people, without whom there would be nothing to see! The good number of sales made, lent to the show a sense of appreciation by the wider public. Anyone interested in assisting with this annual event should contact Martha Nixon or Jack Fisher.
New Photo Albums
Caitlin Beck has uploaded more than a dozen new photo albums to St John's Facebook page:
The albums include "OMG Regional Youth Retreat 2011", Our Pascal Meal, 2011, several albums on the choir and MANY more!
Placement of Baptismal Font
As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." Galatians 3:27 As last week's baptisms remind us, the Easter season is a time to reflect on the gift of baptism and what it calls us to do. To help us do this, we will be keeping the baptismal font with water in it in the middle of the centre aisle throughout the Easter season.
Deputy Warden
Parish Council, on Tuesday this week, accepted the warden's recommendation that Bill Broughton be appointed Deputy Warden. The position of Deputy Warden was left vacant when Monica Patten's was appointed as Rector's Warden by the Bishop. We are delighted to have Bill's experience and wisdom at Corporation and Parish Council meetings.
Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI)
MHI's annual fundraising Tulipathon Walk on May 1 raised approximately $23,000. On behalf of St John's Affordable Housing Committee and MHI, thanks so much to all of you who generously donated more than $1,000 to this walk in support of MHI's work in creating more affordable housing for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in our city.

Flower Calendar
There is a new Flower Calendar in the hall outside the Church hall. Please write your name beside the date you choose to celebrate with flowers. It does not have to be for a memorial but can be for a special celebration such as a birthday or a wedding anniversary. Some dates are kept on a regular basis for people who have donated flowers on those dates for many years. There can be more than one lot of flowers on the same date.
For more information contact Vicki Milnes.
Flower Team Members
Do you enjoy flowers and floral arranging? The flowers that we have been arranging for the past two years have been much admired. With a couple of new people on the team the job would come along every once in a while.
For more information contact Vicki Milnes.
Bulletin Announcements
If you have any announcements for the end of the service, please be sure to speak to Rob before the service; written announcements must reach the office by Wednesday before noon.
Our Many Ministries
Posted 5 march 2011Our members are involved in over 50 ministry "activities" here at St Johns. Reports of these activities are contained in our Reports to Vestry each year.
If you are a visitor to the parish, a perusal of these reports will give you a very good idea about St Johns and how we serve the Lord in this place.
If you are member of the parish, you might find a ministry in these reports that would suit your skills and interests.
The Vestry Reports for 2010 are now up on our website.

Parish Prayer Chain
St. John’s Prayer chain provides confidential, daily prayer support for immediate and/or confidential prayer requests. All requests are welcomed. The Prayer Chain is a dedicated group of 16 parishioners from St John’s that agree to pray daily for a period of 2 weeks for each person on their prayer list (unless an extension is requested). Each day, one of the Prayer Captains retrieves the prayer requests from the Prayer Chain extension #21 on the St. John’s office phone system and contacts the other Prayer Chain members. To leave a prayer request for the Prayer Chain, contact the office at 613-232-4500 and ask for extension 21 or if the answering system comes on, press 21 to reach the extension directly. If needed, you may also contact one of the Prayer Chain Captains directly: Karen Berg, Marietta Stenman or Patricia Fisher.
Parking at the Army Officer's Mess
Please be advised that St John’s has been officially notified by the Department of National Defence (DND) that the Army Officer's Mess parking lot is private property owned by DND and, as such, the previous practice of authorizing outside individuals or groups to “legally trespass” on their property cannot continue. If an accident (personal or vehicular) were to occur then DND could be made liable for damages. If St John’s Parishioners continue do use the parking lot, it is at their own risk to be ticketed and/or towed away and DND will not be responsible should this occur. While they regret the inconvenience this will cause, they ask us to please refrain from using their lot.

Our thanks to Caitlin for taking on these new responsibilities.
MEET OUR MUSICIANS
Artist-in-Residence – Cara Gilbertson
Soprano Cara Gilbertson is an accomplished performer and teacher. Cara was a choral scholar at St John’s during her masters degree studies at the University of Ottawa, and when she graduated, she was invited to be an “Artist-in-Residence” at St John’s. Cara and her students give frequent recitals here, and Cara’s annual Summer Vocal Academy is based here at St John’s. In the 2007-2008 concert season, Cara made her debut with The National Arts Centre Orchestra.Choral Scholar – Ashley Cross
Ashley Cross is 18 years old and is a first year Voice major studying under the direction of Professor Ingemar Korjus. Originally from Newmarket, Ontario, Ashley has participated in many local and national festivals and competitions since the age of 13. She truly began singing when she was introduced to her original teacher Irene Ilic, who proved to be an amazing role model and the main reason she is so driven today. She is so excited to be apart of the St John’s choir and has felt nothing but warmth and welcoming for everyone in the congregation. Ashley hopes to earn her degree as a performance major.Choral Scholar – Matthew Timmermans
18 year old, Matthew Timmermans, born and raised in Toronto, sparked an interest in music through various summer programs and musicals before he began his true development in the ARTS YORK program at Unionville High School. Matthew is currently working on a Baccalaureate of Music at the University of Ottawa where he studies with Professor Ingemar Korjus. Matthew is happy to be a part of the St. John’s Anglican Church Choir and congregation – it has only added to the dream that Ottawa has been. Hoping the next few years will help him bloom to become the best he can be, Matthew hopes to earn his degree as a performance major.Organ Scholar – Joshua Zentner-Barrett
The newest member of our musical “team”, Josh is a grade twelve student at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville. He began his organ studies with Pamela Hoswitschka at Woodroffe United Church, and now studies with Karen Holmes, Professor of Organ at the University of Ottawa. As organ scholar at St John’s, he will accompany the choir, play for the service, and perform solo organ music. This fall, he plans to study organ performance at university, with a view to becoming a professional church musician.
St. John's Affordable Housing Committee
Support for CornerstoneCapital Campaign Cornerstone is building 42 units of supportive and affordable housing for the most vulnerable homeless women in Ottawa. The Affordable Housing Committee is committed to raising the funds to "Adopt-A-Room" at the new facility. This initiative allows groups or individuals to fund the purchase of all the furnishings for a single room including furniture, kitchen appliances and linens. This Christmas, make a difference for one homeless woman to have a home of her own through the purchase of Loblaws Gift Cards (we buy the cards at a discounted rate when we buy in volume) or a donation to the St. John's Affordable Housing Committee in support of this project. To buy Loblaws cards or for more information please see Peggy Lister in the Parish Hall following the service.
Soup Makers Needed
Terrific Tuesday, Calling for Soup makers. We, Teerrific Tuesday folks, have enjoyed another year of Terrific Soup! Terrific Tuesday convenes again from January 4th 2011. We will need -please sign up!
Centretown Emergency Food Centre
St. John's supports the Centretown Emergency Food Centre through its membership in the Centretown Churches Social Action Committee. Every month, the Food Centre (which is different from the Ottawa Food Bank) serves about 800 individuals. In a year, almost 10,000 emergency baskets are handed out.
As the churches becomes less able to give money to the Centre, our individual donations become more important. Remember the Food Centre every Sunday: give a Loblaws card, some food, or some money. The best food donations are: cans of fruit or vegetables (very non-exotic, like peaches and peas, not beets or guava), canned pasta, Kraft Dinner, cereal. Flour and baking supplies are occasionally good, but many of the clients don't have ovens or the capacity to bake. Think microwaves and can openers. Food that is too old is thrown out, so if you are cleaning out a cupboard check the dates before donating. Volunteering at the Centre is fun. Right now, there are enough volunteers, but that situation can always change. If you are interested in learning more about the Food Centre, St. John's has a number of volunteers, or you can call Kerry, the Director, at (613) 232-3059.
A Statement from the Corporation
and Parish Council of the
Church of St John the Evangelist
A Tradition of Inclusion
November 2010The Church of St John the Evangelist strives to be a church which welcomes all people. We see ourselves as a community of seekers, grappling together with the great questions of life and faith. As a congregation, we have put a lot of prayer, thought, and planning into ways in which we can remove the barriers preventing people from finding their place amongst us and contributing to the rich diversity of life as seekers committed to Jesus’ vision of God, humankind and the future of creation.

Unison Festival
The Unison Festival is the Canadian quadrennial festival of LGBT choruses. The city of Ottawa has been awarded this festival for the year 2014. This event is expected to attract 500-700 visitors, singers and musicians to the city. After establishing a membership including members of the three LGBT choruses which rehearse at St. John's, and other interested members of the community, the organizers held their first Annual General Meeting on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at St. John's at which the bylaws of the organization were approved and a new Board of Directors was elected. Unfortunately, the position of Treasurer remains vacant. The organizers of Unison would like to extend an invitation to members of the congregation at St. John's to consider participating in the activities of Unison either as a community member ($25 yearly membership fee) or to fill the position of Treasurer. Anyone wishing more information may contact Luc Chartrand at 613-212-0584.
Security at St. John’s
We have received word that there is a pleasant-looking, middle-aged couple that is visiting local churches with larceny in mind. Please ensure that you remove keys and other valuables from your pockets before you hang up your coats; bags and purses should not be left unattended. Church key holders are reminded not leave their keys unattended at any time. If you notice any suspicious behaviour, please alert a member of the staff or the duty warden.
St. John’s Name Tags
Name tags have been printed for all parishioners and are available at both the western door and the ramp entrances to the Church. You are invited to wear your name tag to help identify you to newcomers or other parishioners with whom you may not be well-acquainted. After the service or coffee hour, please return your name tag to the box in which you found it. It helps with storing the name tags if your place the string into the plastic holder before returning it to the storage box.

Pastoral Care is...
A ministry of presence
responding to God's love
founded on faith and prayer
focusing on the other person(s) through active listening together
for God's life giving and creative presence in our lives,
offering support and guidance,
sharing our faith and our prayers. Our Pastoral Care Committee has prepared a new brochure on the many ministry opportunities for our members in pastoral care.
The St John's Prayer Chain
In times of crisis, when praying is difficult, when connections to God seem impossible, it is comforting to know that others are praying for us. When a family member or friend is ill, it is helpful to know that a team of people is praying.
For many years, a group of 15 to 20 people have supported prayer requests. The group is organized so that the prayer requests can be passed confidentially and quickly from one person to the next until an entire chain of people is praying.
At this time we want to remind everyone that the prayer is available. If you have a request, simply call the church at 613-232-4500 and ask for the Prayer Chain line. Then leave a message. Your request will be treated confidentially and transmitted to the prayer chain. If you wish to talk to the leader, please leave contact information and someone will get back to you.

Affordable Housing Committee
Loblaws Gift Card ProgramEver wondered what is happening at that table in the Corner of the Hall? Well, it is the Affordable Housing Committee of St. Johns selling Loblaws Gift Cards. This program, run by Peggy Lister, raises between $150 and $400 per month which the Affordable Housing Committee uses to carry on their work of making housing affordable in the city of Ottawa.
Loblaws provides a discount to non-profit organizations who purchase gift cards in bulk. When we order more the $5,000 we receive a 3% discount. If we can purchase over $10,000 we receive a 4% discount. The cards are available for purchase at face value and can be used at any Loblaws, Superstore, Val-mart, No Frills or Independent grocery store. They work like a debit card and can be used repeatedly until their value is zero.
We would love to talk to you more about the program. Drop by the table or contact Peggy Lister, Kathleen Arsenault or Gloria Fox.
Our Food Baskets
Please, folks, we would like to contribute more earnestly to ending poverty right here. Please bring in different foodstuffs for The Well (soups, pastas, cereals, peanut butter etc - also diapers are needed). We will continue to bring up a basket of food at the time of the offertory, but there will be more baskets provided at the Elgin Street entrance.
Circles of Support and Accountability [CoSA] is a community-based reintegration program designed to support people newly released from prison who have been convicted of sex offenses, admit to committing these offences, and request CoSA's help to prevent further offending. See our CoSA page for more details of this interesting program hosted by St John's.

Compline
Second and Fourth SundaysCompline is a beautiful, peaceful, prayerful evening liturgy sung by members of St. John's choir. It happens twice a month at 9 PM in the Chapel of Remembrance. Would you be interested in being a keeper of the incense for the duration of the service? Please contact Gordon if you are interested.
A liturgical note: Intinction
Don't!Intinction is the practice of dipping the communion bread into the chalice instead of drinking from the common cup, and it's something we discourage. If you do not wish to drink from the chalice, rest assured that in the Anglican tradition, communion in one kind (receiving the bread only) is considered a complete communion.
Please do NOT dip communion bread into the wine.
Bible Study
Each Sunday at 9.00 a.mWould you like to join with other parishioners to study the weekly Bible readings before the Sunday morning service? Each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. a group meets to discuss the day's readings and to share their thoughts and reflections on the readings. This Bible study takes place in Classroom #2 (across from Wanda's office) and all are welcome.
Rector's Discretionary Fund
Frequently people come by the church to speak with the rector about their needs for financial assistance. In cases of genuine need, she is able to help people by using money from the Rector's Discretionary Fund. This is a fund which receives donations from parishioners who wish to help the poor and support the rector in extending help to individuals in need. Presently the fund has very little money in it.
If you would like to make a donation, please place it in the offertory, clearly marked "Rector's Discretionary Fund", or bring your donation to the church office during the week.
Thank you!
Be Still and Know that I am God
We offer a variety of programmes at St John's that can help you to develop a contemplative practice.
- Every Monday evening, we offer Christian Meditation from 7:30 to 8:30 in Classroom #2.
- Every Tuesday evening, we offer Centering Prayer from 7:30 to 9:00 in Classroom #2.
- The next eight-week course in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction begins January 8th in the Parish Hall. You can find more information about the Mindfulness Course on the sign-up board across from the Nursery.
Please contact Caitlin if you would like more information about any of these programmes.
Children's Nursery
Our nursery is available for use during the service on Sunday mornings. It is located up the stairs beside the ramp entrance, next to the women's restroom. Sometimes the door is locked by mistake; if you find the door locked, please ask the duty warden to open the nursery for you.
"This Week at St John's" is the title of an informal weekly e-mail message sent by the rector to everyone on the parish list with an e-mail address. Print copies of "This Week" are posted on the bulletin board near the parish office.
If you wish to have your e-mail address added to the parish list, please send it to office@stjohnsottawa.ca.
For those not on parish e-mail list we will be posting a [delayed] copy of Garth's "This Week at St Johns" on our website
The St John's Prayer Chain
At St John's we recognize the power of prayer and have countless examples of healing and wholeness that have resulted from prayer. Some of these examples are miraculous. In times of crisis, when praying is difficult, it is comforting to know that others are praying.
For many years, a group of 15 to 20 people have supported prayer requests. The group is organized so that the prayer requests can be passed quickly from one person to the next until an entire chain of people is praying. The members of the Prayer Chain have a special community. Their prayers join strongly, even though they all pray separately. It is a special connection to light and love.
At this time we want to remind everyone that the Prayer Chain is there. If you have a request, simply call the church at 613-232-4500 and ask for the Prayer Chain line. Then leave a message for the prayer leader who will contact you. Also, please consider joining in this special ministry. Please contact Kathryn Otley if you would like to participate.
Quotes from Prayer Chain Members:
" .....there is fellowship. You can be a part of what's going on no matter where you are."
"People who love the church but can't get to it can help in a powerful way."
"It is an honour to contribute to a community of prayers."
"I can be part of the spirit of prayer, which is a glowing...."

I have just spent 45 minutes reading old sermons - some I had heard and some I had not. What a pick-me-up! Thanks for doing this for St. John's and anyone else who might need a boost.Want a 'boost'?
Have a look at some of our sermons.
Purse snatchers are active in churches!
It would be nice to think that we could be totally without a care in church and not have to worry about security, but that may have to wait until the fullness of the Kingdom arrives. Until that perfect day, please keep an eye on your purse and other belongings during the service. Do not leave belongings unattended; bring your purse with you as you come forward to receive communion.
You asked: "Where do these 'new' collects come from?"
Well let us tell you all about the collects we use each Sunday.
