Besides our 'official staff' are the many volunteer and elected members that share in our ministry together at St. John's. Many are listed on the various reports on this site, but many more go unnamed. Together we are all baptised ministers serving God in this place.

St. John's is the second oldest parish within the Diocese of Ottawa. It traces its roots back to the "Garrison Church" established in 1853 and was under the administration of Christ Church, the "Mother Church of Ottawa", until 1870. In 1874 it was reconsecrated as St. John the Evangelist. The original church building was destroyed by fire in 1912 and it became united with Grace Church (established in 1890). The combined parishes chose the name of St. John the Evangelist and occupied the present site at the corner of Elgin and Somerset Streets in the downtown area.
See our History Page for a more detailed history and a photograph of the church.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, St. John's is called to be a parish community that worships and lives for God, constantly growing in our relationship to Jesus Christ and one another, caring about and helping our neighbours near and far; and sharing experiences of prayer, sacraments, learning, witness, outreach and fellowship.
We are constantly reviewing and occassionally revising our understanding of God's will for us as a Christian community in this time and place. Our current mission, goals and Credo statements attempt to encompass this understanding.
You may have noticed our signboards; caught the splash of summer colour in our gardens; or been drawn to the understated facade of a church that has been a fixture of this community since 1891 - But have you met our people? To help you get to know us better, we have included a few articles on who we are and the JOY of belonging to St. Johns.
We believe that the Good news of Jesus Christ is intended for all of God's people regardless of their race, colour, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation. Our parish has hosted several ecumenical workshops for Christian churches in the Ottawa area titled "Opening the Doors to Gays and Lesbians" and several members of our parish have taken lead roles in the Diocese of Ottawa Task Group on Gays and Lesbians.
St. John's has publicly declared that it is "Open and Affirming of Gay Men and Lesbians" as suggested by the Diocesan Task Group.
The reports to Parish Synod covering our Operation / Governance of the parish are linked at the top of this page.
